- Kamiel Proost

Kamiel Proost, born in 1969, is a multifaceted artist residing in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Renowned for his surreal paintings, poetry, and music, Proost’s work is a vibrant amalgamation of diverse cultural influences. He draws inspiration from tattoo art, the Old Dutch Masters, Japanese Kawaii culture, the insect world, skulls, fairy tales, ancient wisdom, and contemporary absurdities.
Proost’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in his unique living environment at Nieuw en Meer, a private art ‘village’ on the outskirts of Amsterdam. This creative enclave, established in repurposed army storage buildings, houses over a hundred studios occupied by painters, woodworkers, sculptors, musicians, and other artisans. Proost has been part of this vibrant community for over two decades, fostering a collaborative and inspiring atmosphere that profoundly influences his art.
His oeuvre is characterized by a blend of humor and seriousness, often infused with social commentary. Proost aims to evoke a sense of freedom, wonder, and beauty in his audience, always with a subtle touch of humor. His work has been featured in various exhibitions, including a notable show in Tokyo, and has graced the pages of publications like Playboy and FHM.
In addition to traditional canvases, Proost’s art extends to blotter art, making his pieces highly collectible among psychedelic art enthusiasts. His contributions to this niche art form further cement his status as a staple of Amsterdam’s art scene.
